Rats sneak into homes during winter for warmth, food & shelter. From tiny gaps in walls to kitchen crumbs and leaks, small oversights can attract them. Here’s how to keep them out
Rats can squeeze through surprisingly tiny openings—gaps around windows, doors, gas pipes, or electrical wiring. Inspect your home for cracks or holes and seal them immediately with steel wool or cement. Installing ‘door sweeps’ at the bottom of doors adds an extra layer of protection.Old newspapers, cardboard boxes, and unused clothes stacked in storerooms create dark, cozy nesting spots. Rats chew through them and build soft bedding. Keep storage areas organised, use plastic containers instead of cardboard, and clear out unwanted items regularly.Rats gather near water sources—leaks under the sink, damp bathroom walls, or stagnant water outside. Fix any dripping pipes, ensure proper ventilation in basements and bathrooms, and prevent water from collecting around the house to keep them away.Overgrown branches, shrubs, and leaf piles near walls provide hiding spots and easy access into the house. Trim plants regularly, keep the garden tidy, and avoid placing garbage bins close to walls to cut off their entry routes.During winter, rats seek warm corners like behind the fridge, near heaters, and inside wall gaps. Install fine mesh on ventilators, and seal AC vents or pipe openings to eliminate warm entry points.
